This Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is located in the northern part of Chennai and holds deep historical and spiritual significance. The presiding deity, Adhipuriswarar, is believed to be the first Swayambu lingam to appear on earth after a legendary flood, with the temple name Tiruvottiyur derived from the receding waters. The shrine features a seven-tiered gateway tower and encompasses approximately one acre. The temple was originally constructed during the Pallava dynasty in the 7th century and underwent major renovations and expansions under the Chola kings in the 11th century, particularly under Rajendra Chola I. It shares architectural and sculptural parallels with the Thyagaraja temple in Tiruvarur, both displaying identical dance poses of Shiva. The temple is classified as one of the 51 Shakti Peetams in India and is closely associated with the 8th-century saint poet Sundarar and the Saiva nayanars. The sanctum contains a Swayambu lingam within an ant-hill, flanked by representations of Vishnu and Brahma, with additional shrines dedicated to Goddess Parvathy, Kuzhanthai Eswarar, Lord Murugan, Ganapati, and Durga.
