About Thiruvizha Mahadeva Temple

Located in the village of Thiruvizha, approximately five kilometers south of Cherthala town in Alappuzha district, this ancient temple stands as a sanctuary for healing and spiritual purification. According to local legend, the temple originated when a self-manifested Shiva Lingam was discovered in a pond after a woman searching for crabs struck the ground with her digging stick, causing blood to flow from the earth. A visiting yogi subsequently instructed the local community on preparing sacred medicinal formulas to aid the afflicted. The temple's primary deity is Sri Parameswara in the form of Thiruneelakanth Bhava, and it houses subsidiary shrines dedicated to Mahavishnu, Dharma Sastha, Ganesha, serpent deities, and other celestial beings. The temple is particularly celebrated for its Oushadha Seva, a therapeutic ritual involving the consumption of herbal medicine prepared according to secret traditional recipes, performed only in the mornings following the Pantheeradi pooja. The temple maintains five daily pujas and three evening rituals, with the premises meticulously maintained despite the unique practices conducted within.
