Maruthorvattom Temple
About Maruthorvattom Temple
The temple's name derives from the Malayalam phrase "Marunnu Oru Vattam," meaning a single dose of medicine. This reflects a local tradition connected to Velludu Namboothiri, an Ayurvedic physician who lived in this region approximately 600 years ago. According to local belief, his medical skill was so refined that a single remedy could cure even chronic ailments—a reputation that became woven into the place's identity and memory.
The idol of Lord Dhanwanthari was originally kept in the private pooja room of a Brahmin. According to temple tradition, a Kshatriya devotee from Vayalar, inspired by a dream revelation, retrieved the idol from a temple pond called Kelan Kulam in nearby Cherthala South. The devotee, seeking relief from a chronic peptic ailment, donated the idol to the Brahmin. Over time, as devotion to the deity grew, the community established a formal temple to provide proper worship and accommodate the increasing number of visitors seeking the deity's blessings.
Daily Worship and Rituals
The temple opens early each morning at 5:00 AM, accommodating devotees who prefer dawn darshan. Morning hours extend until 11:30 AM, while evening darshan runs from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM. Early morning on weekdays is considered the best time for a quieter, more meditative visit.
Several ritual services are performed throughout the day, including Usha Pooja (dawn worship), Pantheeradi Pooja, Ucha Pooja, and Athazha Pooja. The evening Deeparadhana (lamp offering) is a significant ritual that draws devotees seeking the deity's blessings. The temple also offers online vazhipadu (ritual sponsorship) for those unable to visit in person. Specific poojas addressing health concerns and family wellness are available, reflecting the temple's primary purpose as a place of healing prayer.
