About Thirunadhikkara Cave Temple
This rock-cut cave temple dedicated to Shiva dates to the late 8th or early 9th century and forms part of the larger Thirunanthikarai Shri Nandeeswara temple complex. The Archaeological Survey of India attributes it to Ay king Vikramaditya Varaguna, though some scholars credit earlier Pandya rulers. The temple contains faded murals depicting palatial scenes and Vaishnava themes in early Kerala artistic style, along with Tamil inscriptions documenting donations for sacred lamps and musician payments. According to historical records, King Raja Raja Chola celebrated his birthday at this site in AD 1003. The cave temple was possibly initially established as a Jain monastery before its conversion to a Shiva temple.
