About Thirumeignanam Gnanaparameswarar Temple
Located in Thirumeignanam (also known as Naalur Mayanam), this ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva in his manifestation as Gnanaparameswarar, with his consort Parvati revered as Gnanambikai. Originally constructed during the early Chola period and later enhanced with granite by Chola king Aditya I, the temple stands as an architectural monument featuring a square sanctum sanctorum with a distinctive round-ball-shaped peak. The presiding deity graces beneath a Gajabrushta Vimanam (temple roofing), and the sacred lingam is believed to be self-manifested and worshipped by the four Vedas. The temple is one of 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, glorified in the Tevaram hymns of Saivite saints Tiruganasambandar, Tirunavukkarasar, and Sundarar. Devotees seek blessings for removal of marriage obstacles, educational brilliance, and general life benefits, offering abhishek and clothing as thanksgiving.
