About Thazhakara Subrahmanya Temple

Beyond the main shrine of Lord Murugan, the temple complex houses several subsidiary deities, each with separate temple abodes and daily worship rituals. These include Lord Krishna, Shastha, Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesa, Devi, Yogeeswaran, and various serpent deities. This arrangement reflects the interconnected nature of Hindu worship, where multiple divine forms are honoured within a single sacred space.

A distinctive feature of the temple is its Sarpa Kavu, or serpent grove, located on the north-west side of the main shrine. These groves serve as sacred abodes for divine serpents, with deities installed in structures called Chitrakudas. The Sarpa Kavu is maintained as a traditional water-harvesting system, with centuries-old creepers and trees preserved as part of Kerala's deep-rooted tradition of honouring plants and animals as manifestations of the divine.

Worship and Ritual Observance

Shashti—the sixth day following both the new moon and full moon—holds particular significance at this temple. These days draw substantial numbers of pilgrims and are considered especially auspicious for worship of Lord Murugan. The temple's daily rituals are overseen by the Melshanti, who ensures that prescribed poojas and ceremonies are performed with proper observance.

The temple has undergone physical and spiritual renovations in recent years, enhancing its facilities and atmosphere. The increasing tide of devotees on Shashti days reflects the temple's growing importance as a pilgrimage destination.

Thypooyam Festival

The major festival observed at Thazhakara is Thypooyam, celebrated in the Malayalam month of Makaram, which corresponds to January-February. This festival occurs on the day of the star Pooyam around Pournami (the full moon). Thypooyam is traditionally associated with Murugan worship across Kerala temples, and the festival at Thazhakara draws devotees seeking the deity's blessings during this auspicious period.
