Thakazhy Sree Dharma Sastha Temple
About Thakazhy Sree Dharma Sastha Temple
The temple was established over 800 years ago, making it an ancient site within Kerala's religious landscape. According to local tradition, the idol worshipped here was originally installed by Lord Parasurama on Othera hill. Following a severe flood that displaced the idol, it was discovered on a farm by an Odiyan, a figure known in Kerala's spiritual traditions. The idol was then placed in the care of Vilwamangalam Swamiyar, a revered spiritual teacher who recognized its sanctity and entrusted it to Sage Udhayarkkan. Udhayarkkan installed the idol at the temple's present location in Thakazhy. The King of Chembakassery subsequently constructed the temple structure that visitors encounter today, formalizing the site as an established place of worship.
The temple stands on ground with historical connections to Buddhist traditions, reflecting Kerala's long history of religious coexistence and spiritual evolution.
Daily Worship and Rituals
The temple follows the Manayathattu tantric tradition, maintaining a structured schedule of five daily poojas. This regular rhythm of worship creates a consistent spiritual atmosphere throughout the day. Visitors who time their arrival during pooja hours may experience the rhythmic chanting of prayers and the fragrance of incense characteristic of Kerala temple worship. The tantric approach to ritual here emphasizes precise performance and spiritual discipline as pathways to devotion.
The temple's ritual practices are integral to its identity and shape the devotional experience of those who visit. The combination of incense, prayer chanting, and the presence of fellow worshippers creates an environment conducive to meditation and spiritual reflection.
Visiting Hours and Practical Information
The temple is open Monday through Friday only. Morning darshan runs from 5:00 AM to 11:15 AM, while evening hours extend from 5:00 PM to 7:45 PM. Visitors should plan their visit within these windows, noting that early morning hours hold traditional significance in Hindu worship practice. It is advisable to check locally before visiting, as temple schedules may be subject to change during festivals or special observances. Darshan wait times typically range from 30 minutes to one hour.
Modest dress is customary—covering shoulders and knees is appropriate. Footwear should be removed before entering the inner sanctum. Visitors should move quietly through temple spaces and avoid disrupting those engaged in prayer or meditation. Photography policies vary; it is best to inquire locally before photographing. Parking is available at the temple.
Best Times to Visit
The annual festival during the Kumbham month (roughly February–March in the Hindu calendar) draws devotees and offers an opportunity to experience the temple during its most significant observance. For those seeking a more tranquil visit, the cooler months from October to February provide pleasant weather and typically lighter crowds. These months align well with Kerala's climate and allow visitors to experience the temple's peaceful setting without the intensity of festival periods.

The temple is situated in Thakazhy village, Alappuzha district, Kerala, approximately six kilometers from Ambalapuzha. The GPS coordinates are 10.204406, 76.306378. Visitors traveling to the temple should use these coordinates with GPS navigation or consult local directions, as rural temple locations in Kerala are often best reached with specific guidance.
