About Sthalasayana Perumal Temple

Located in Mahabalipuram, Chengalpattu district, Tamil Nadu, this sacred shrine venerates Lord Vishnu as Sthalasayana Perumal (the reclining deity) alongside his consort Lakshmi as Nilamangai Thayar. The temple was established by the Pallavas during the 7th century and subsequently enhanced by the Cholas, Vijayanagara kings, and Madurai Nayaks. Built in the Dravidian architectural style, it features a seven-tiered rajagopuram constructed during the 15th-16th century and comprises two precincts with granite bases adorned with intricate sculptures. According to legend, Vishnu appeared to sage Pundarika at this location during his penance, giving the temple its name meaning 'reclining in the sacred place.' The temple is recognized as the 63rd Divya Desam and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites designation as one of the 32 Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram.
