About Sri Siva Maha Mariamman

Founded in 1873 by Kayarohanam Pillai and later developed by Mr. Thamboosamy Pillai, Sri Maha Mariamman Temple stands as a cultural landmark for the Tamil community in Malaysia. The temple was initially constructed with wooden planks and a simple roof, then expanded with a small stone structure in 1888. Recognizing the need for a larger space as the Tamil population grew, the temple management reconstructed the sanctuary, erecting a grand new temple with an impressive 85-foot tall Rajagopuram. The current five-storey gopuram, standing 22.9 meters high, was carved by an experienced craftsman from India and features 228 intricately sculpted deities. The temple underwent a grand Kumbabishekam (consecration ceremony) in 1954 and remains registered and active under the management of the Batu Caves Murugan Temple. It serves as a vital spiritual hub where pujas and festivals are celebrated with deep devotion, accommodating approximately 500 devotees.
