About Kuil Seri Maha Mariamman

The temple's origins trace back to 1873 when it was established as a religious charity by Kayarohanam Pillai. Initially constructed using wooden planks with a simple roof, a small stone structure was added in 1888 to accommodate growing numbers of worshippers. As the Tamil population expanded, the temple was reconstructed with a grand new structure featuring an 85-foot tall Rajagopuram (gateway tower). The temple was consecrated with a Kumbabishekam ceremony in 1954 and remains a vital place of worship for Tamil devotees. The architecture is distinctive, with the temple resembling the shape of a human body lying on its back, head facing west and feet facing east. The gopuram stands 22.9 meters tall and was carved by an experienced craftsman from India, featuring 228 intricately sculpted deities in Dravidian style.
