About Sri Rajagopala Swamy temple

The Rajagopalaswamy Temple stands as one of Tamil Nadu's most significant Vaishnavite sanctuaries, constructed between 1072 and 1122 CE during the reign of Chola king Kulothunga I. Spanning 23 acres of sacred space in Mannargudi, the temple exemplifies Chola architectural brilliance with 16 mandapams and 9 towers. The presiding deity is Rajagopalaswamy, a manifestation of Lord Krishna, worshipped alongside Sri Sengamala Thayar (Lakshmi). Known by multiple epithets including Dakshina Dwaraka (the Dwarka of the South), the temple holds paramount significance as the foremost of the 108 Abhimana Kshetras in Vaishnavite tradition. The temple follows Pancharatra Agama worship protocols and is administered by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department. The annual Brahmotsavam festival in March–April is the temple's most important celebration, featuring a spectacular 10-day grand chariot procession.
