About Abhaya Varadeeswarar Temple
This ancient Shiva temple, located in Adhiramapattinam within Thanjavur district, enshrines Lord Shiva as Abhaya Varadeeswarar (the fearless bestower of boons) represented through the lingam. The presiding goddess, Sundaranayaki, is revered as Kadal Partha Nayaki, facing the sea. The temple holds significance in Tamil Saiva tradition, being mentioned in the 7th-century Tevaram hymns composed by the Nayanars, particularly by saints Tirugnanasambandar and Sundarar. According to local belief, the three eyes of Shiva grace devotees from the sanctum, and the temple is associated with the Thiruvathirai nakshatra. Devotees seek relief from planetary afflictions caused by Rahu and Ketu, and perform sacred rituals like Mrutyunjaya Homa and Ayush Homa for longevity and protection from death. The temple's history traces to King Adhiveerarama Pandian, a Thiruvathirai-born devotee who undertook significant renovations, and the settlement itself evolved from Tiru Adhirai Pattinam to its present name Athirampattinam.
