Sri Bharat Mandir stands as a cornerstone of Rishikesh's spiritual heritage, enshrined in the city's very identity. According to temple lore, Lord Vishnu, pleased by the intense penance of Rishi Raibhya, declared he would reside here eternally as Hrishikesh Narayan. The temple's history intertwines with Rishikesh's own narrative, and its sanctity is reinforced by the belief that those who worshipped Vishnu in his various incarnations—Varah in Satyug, Parashuram in Treta Yug, Vaman in Dwapar, and Bharat in Kaliyug—attain liberation. During the ninth century, Adi Shankaracharya reinstalled the idol of Lord Hrishikesh Bharatji on the auspicious day of Basant Panchami. The temple complex also houses the Bhadra Kali Temple dedicated to Goddess Durga, recognized as a Siddha Pitha. Beyond its religious functions, the temple has fostered education through Sri Bharat Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya, established in 1921 to preserve Vedic culture and Sanskrit learning.
