Sree Bhavaneeswara Mahakshethram
About Sree Bhavaneeswara Mahakshethram
The temple follows the traditional Kerala style of construction, characteristic of Shiva shrines across the region. In 1998, a golden flagstaff (Swarna Dwaja) was installed near the temple, enhancing its visual prominence and spiritual significance. The presence of multiple shrine spaces within the complex accommodates the various deities worshipped here, allowing devotees to move through the temple and offer prayers according to their chosen focus.
Daily Worship and Rituals
The temple opens early in the morning at 4:00 AM and remains accessible until 11:30 PM, with an additional evening window from 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM. This extended schedule accommodates both early risers and those who visit after work or other commitments. Regular rituals observed here include Nava Graha Homam (worship of the nine celestial bodies), performed every Sunday. Annadhanam (ritual feeding) and Sampoorna Nirmala (complete purification rituals) are also sponsored by devotees on Sundays, reflecting the temple's emphasis on collective worship and service.
Masik Shivarathri (the monthly observance dedicated to Lord Shiva) and Pradosham (the twilight worship performed on specific lunar days) are among the significant observances maintained throughout the year. These rituals follow the lunar calendar and are typical of Shiva temples across Kerala and South India.
The Mahotsavam Festival
The temple's most prominent annual celebration is the Mahotsavam, an 11-day festival held between February and March. The festival begins with the Bharani star in the Malayalam month of Kumbham (Aquarius). A defining feature of this celebration is the participation of elephants—the temple traditionally features 15 elephants in a competitive procession between the northern and southern sides of the temple grounds.
The temple is historically notable for hosting the Maha Gaja Mela, a grand elephant gathering that once assembled 108 elephants, making it the largest such congregation in the Ernakulam district. The Swarna Dwaja Pratista Day, observed annually on the day immediately before Mahotsavam begins, marks another important occasion in the temple's calendar.
Visiting the Temple: Practical Information
The temple is located at Palluruthy in Kochi's Ernakulam district, at coordinates 9.918889, 76.273056. Photography is not permitted inside the temple premises. Visitors should dress modestly, as is customary at Hindu temples; women typically wear sarees or salwar kameez, and men wear dhotis or simple trousers. Shoes are removed before entering the sanctum.
The best season to visit is February to March, when the Mahotsavam festival transforms the temple into a hub of activity and celebration. However, the temple welcomes visitors year-round during its extended operating hours.
Getting There
The temple is accessible by multiple transport options. By road, Ernakulam Bus Stand is the major hub connecting Kochi to other cities; local buses serve Palluruthy. The nearest railway station is Ernakulam Junction, approximately 9 kilometers away. For those arriving by air, Cochin International Airport is about 40 kilometers from the temple. From any of these points, local taxis or auto-rickshaws can complete the journey to Palluruthy.
