About Somnath

The Somanatha Temple stands at Prabhas Patan in Veraval, Gujarat, representing one of Hinduism's most sacred sites. As the first among the twelve jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva, it attracts devotees from across the world. While ancient texts including the Mahabharata and Bhagavata Purana reference a tirtha at this coastal location, the exact date of the earliest temple's construction remains uncertain, with scholarly estimates ranging from the early centuries of the first millennium to approximately the ninth century CE. The current temple structure was consecrated on May 11, 1951, by India's first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad. The temple is situated on the western shore of the Indian subcontinent, overlooking the Arabian Sea, and is also revered as the site where Lord Krishna undertook his final journey.
