About Sengazhuneer Amman Temple

Located on the seashore south of Puducherry in Veerampattinam, Sengazhuneer Amman Temple stands as one of the oldest and most revered temples in the Union Territory. According to temple lore, approximately 450 years ago a fisherman named Veera Raghavan discovered a sacred log in his fishing net that began to bleed when struck, revealing itself as a divine manifestation of Mother Ambica, the divine Renuka with powers of Mother Shakti. The deity appeared to Raghavan in a dream, instructing him to establish her worship at a location marked by an anthill where a serpent emerged and struck the ground thrice with its hood. The temple's wooden idol, crafted from Devadharu wood, has become a family deity for numerous families across Puducherry and Tamil Nadu. The temple is particularly known for responding to prayers for vision restoration, marriage blessings, and child boons. Devotees bathe in the sea and offer abhishek and archanas to the Mother. The car festival, held annually during the first six Fridays of Aadi (July–August) with the chariot procession on the fifth Friday, is inaugurated by the Governor of Puducherry, who traditionally holds the rope of the Rath first.
