Varadharaja Perumal Temple, Puducherry
About Varadharaja Perumal Temple, Puducherry
This ancient temple, located in the heritage town region of Puducherry, enshrines Venkatachalapathy as its principal deity, with the idol of Lord Narasimha positioned behind the main sanctum. The temple also houses idols of Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, Lord Lakshman, Sri Venugopala, Sri Santhanagopala, Lord Hanuman, and Lord Navaneetha Krishna. According to local tradition, the temple was originally constructed to honor Lord Rama and his family, but the discovery of the Narasimha Swamy idol before the statues arrived from the sea led to a shift in the temple's primary focus. The structure showcases exquisite Dravidian architecture with ornate gopurams and sculptured towers, and contains a sacred Pushkarani tank featuring 83 spring holes and 12 wells, whose waters are believed to possess healing properties. The temple is particularly renowned for hosting Annaprasanam ceremonies, where parents bring infants for their first rice meal, and for its grand celebrations of Ram Navami and other significant festivals.
