Sarasbaug Temple
About Sarasbaug Temple
The temple's origins lie in an 18th-century beautification project. In 1750, Shrimant Nanasaheb Peshwa (the 8th Peshwa of the Maratha Empire) commissioned the excavation of a lake at the foot of the Parvati Hills. During this work, an island of approximately 25,000 square feet was deliberately retained in the middle of the water. A garden was subsequently developed on this island and named Sarasbaug by the Peshwa.
In 1784, Shrimant Sawai Madhavrao Peshwa (the 12th Peshwa) built the temple itself on this island garden, dedicating it to Lord Ganesha. The shrine thus represents a deliberate act of religious patronage within a larger landscape design. The temple is currently maintained by Shri Devdeveshwar Institute, Parvati, Kothrud.
The Deity and the Idol
The main sanctum houses a small idol of Siddhivinayak Gajanan. The idol has undergone changes over time: the original statue, carved from Kurund stone, was replaced in 1882. The current white marble idol, crafted by Rajasthani artisans, was installed in 1990 and remains the focus of daily worship.
A widely held belief among devotees states that those who worship at this temple for 21 consecutive days, visiting at the same time each day, will have their wishes fulfilled. This practice reflects a broader Hindu tradition of sustained devotional commitment as a path to spiritual fulfilment.
Visiting Hours and Practical Information
The temple is open daily from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., providing extended access for both early morning and evening darshan. There is no entry fee. Early morning hours are recommended for those seeking a more peaceful darshan experience, as the temple attracts substantial crowds throughout the day. During Ganesha Chaturthi and other major festivals, visitor numbers increase dramatically—reaching as many as 80,000 devotees on festival days—so those preferring quieter worship may wish to plan visits outside these peak periods.
The temple is located at Sarasbaug, Chimaji Appa Peshwe Path, Swargate, Pune, Maharashtra 411030. Parking facilities are available on the premises. The site includes shops and a museum, allowing visitors to spend time exploring the grounds beyond the main shrine.
Festivals and Observances
Ganesha Chaturthi, the festival celebrating Lord Ganesha's birthday, draws particularly large crowds to Sarasbaug. During this festival, the usual daily visitor count of approximately 10,000 rises to around 80,000. The temple's island setting and heritage status make it a focal point for Pune's Ganesha celebrations, attracting devotees from across the city and beyond.
The Setting and Surroundings
The temple's location on an island within a lake creates a distinctive atmosphere. The mature trees and garden spaces provide a natural sanctuary within the urban environment of Swargate. This integration of water, vegetation, and architecture reflects the Peshwa-era vision of combining spiritual and aesthetic purposes in a single landscape. Visitors approaching the temple cross from the surrounding city into a more secluded devotional space, a transition that marks the shift from everyday life to worship.
