Rasmancha of Bhubaneshwar Shiva Temple of Manna family
About Rasmancha of Bhubaneshwar Shiva Temple of Manna family
The temple stands on a raised square laterite plinth and features a distinctive pyramidal superstructure that has no parallel among Indian temples. The inner sanctum houses idols of Radha and Krishna and is surrounded by three circumambulatory galleries. These galleries are topped by a colossal pyramidal structure adorned with intricate terracotta work and decorative motifs characteristic of Bengal's architectural tradition. Smaller hut-like structures in Bengali style encircle the main temple, and the entire complex is enclosed by a passageway. The site also preserves large cannons dating to the Malla period, adding to its historical character. When illuminated at night, the pyramidal forms create a striking visual effect.
The Ras Festival and Worship
During the Ras festival in the Malla era, images of deities from across Bishnupur were brought to Rasmancha for veneration. This mass gathering of divine forms made the temple a focal point of regional religious life. The festival continued to be observed at the site until 1932, when the temple's conversion to a protected monument altered its function. Today, while the structure no longer hosts the grand festival celebrations of earlier centuries, it remains a place of pilgrimage and devotion for those drawn to the Radha-Krishna tradition.
Visiting Rasmancha
The temple is located at Dalmadal Para in Bishnupur, approximately 1.5 kilometres from Bishnupur Bus Station. It is open daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Entry is available for a nominal fee of 5 rupees per person. Notably, visitors must obtain entry tickets at Rasmancha in order to visit other temples in Bishnupur; tickets purchased here provide access to the broader temple circuit in the town. The temple is surrounded by a well-maintained garden, making it a pleasant place to spend time while exploring the site's architectural details.
Practical Information for Visitors
Visitors should plan for approximately 30 minutes including travel time from the bus station. Cabs and auto-rickshaws are available for transportation. As this is a protected archaeological monument with active religious significance, visitors should dress modestly and show respect to the space. Photography policies should be confirmed at the site. The illumination of the structure in the evening hours offers a different perspective on the architecture, though visitors should plan their visit within the stated opening hours. No facilities for food or accommodation are noted at the temple itself; these should be arranged in Bishnupur town.
Bishnupur's Temple Heritage
Rasmancha is one of several important temples in Bishnupur, a town with significant Vaishnava heritage from the Malla dynasty period. The centrality of Rasmancha to the ticketing system for other temples underscores its importance as an entry point to understanding the region's religious architecture and history. Visitors interested in terracotta work, brick temple construction, and the Radha-Krishna tradition will find the site particularly rewarding as part of a broader exploration of Bishnupur's devotional landscape.
