Belur Math
About Belur Math
Belur Math was founded when Swami Vivekananda, the chief disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, placed holy relics of Sri Ramakrishna at the premises on December 9, 1898, following the purchase of land on March 4, 1897. Located on the west bank of the Hooghly River in Belur, West Bengal, the Math stands as the spiritual heart of the Ramakrishna movement. The temple complex features multiple shrines including the Sri Ramakrishna Temple, Sri Ma Sarada Devi Temple, Swami Vivekananda Temple, and Swami Brahmananda Temple. Its distinctive architecture deliberately incorporates motifs from Hinduism, Buddhism, and Christianity to represent the harmony and interconnectedness of different spiritual traditions. The complex also houses a museum, the Ramakrishna Sangraha Mandira, and serves as an active center for spiritual practice, education, and social service.
