Prasat Sikhoraphum

Est. 12th century

About Prasat Sikhoraphum

The temple's construction combines brick, sandstone, and laterite—materials chosen for both durability and the capacity to hold fine detail. The most celebrated element is the lintel above the central doorway, carved with a ten-armed Shiva Nataraja (Shiva in his dancing form), surrounded by other Hindu deities including Brahma, Vishnu, Ganesha, and Uma. This carving is the signature image of the temple and warrants close study.

Equally remarkable are the doorway columns framing the central entrance, which display apsara reliefs of such precision that visitors and scholars frequently compare them to the carved work at Angkor Wat. The apsaras are depicted holding lotus flowers, and beside them stand mace-bearing dvarapalas—guardian figures in the Khmer tradition. The fineness of this stonework is unusual to encounter in Thailand and represents the temple's most distinctive artistic achievement. A U-shaped drainage system originally surrounded the buildings on three sides, with the eastern entrance left open; portions of this moat remain and create reflective surfaces, particularly striking at dawn and dusk.

Visiting Hours and Practical Information

The temple is open daily from 07:30 to 18:00. Admission fees are 10 baht for Thai citizens and 50 baht for foreign visitors. The temple grounds are compact—most visitors can walk the entire site in thirty minutes to an hour—making it suitable for those interested in examining carved stonework closely rather than undertaking lengthy walks.

The best times to visit are early morning or late afternoon, when angled sunlight brings out the depth and detail of the carved lintels and doorway columns. At these hours, the light catches the relief work at an angle that reveals the precision of the carving far better than midday sun. Morning and evening also offer the advantage of still water in the moat, which mirrors the temple's structure—a composition many photographers seek to capture.

Getting There

Prasat Sikhoraphum is located in Sikhoraphum District, approximately 34 to 36 kilometres east of Surin city. Visitors can reach it by private vehicle via Highway 226 or by train. The journey from Surin city takes roughly an hour by road, making it feasible to visit as part of a day combining multiple Khmer temples in the surrounding area.

What to Bring and How to Approach the Site

Bring a zoom or telephoto lens if photographing the carved lintels, as the reliefs sit at height and distant framing will capture detail more effectively than wide-angle shots taken from ground level. The temple's appeal lies in the precision of its stonework rather than in scale or extensive grounds, so plan time to stand before the central doorway and examine the apsara columns and Shiva Nataraja lintel at leisure.

Dress respectfully when visiting, as this remains a sacred site. Temples of the Hindu tradition typically expect visitors to remove shoes before entering shrines and to avoid pointing feet toward images of deities. Though the temple has undergone Buddhist adaptation, the original Hindu iconography remains central to its identity and significance.
