About Penneswaraar Temple
Penneswaraar Temple, also known as Penneshvaramadam Shiva Temple, was constructed by Kulothunga Chola III following his victory over the Hoysala dynasty. The temple is situated in Penneshvaramadam village near Talihalli in Krishnagiri District, positioned directly beside the Thenpennai River that originates from Nandi Hills. The shrine is recognized as the origin point for the Bharadvaja Gotra, a Brahmin community descended from the later Pallava dynasty whose capital was Kanchipuram. The temple features a seven-tiered Rajagopuram, the largest in Krishnagiri District, traditionally attributed to Athiyaman. It contains numerous inscriptions spanning multiple periods and kingdoms, including references to the port of Chennai and canal construction during Kampanna II's reign. A statue of Kulothunga Chola III serves as a testament to the temple's founder.
