About Pathala Ponniamman Temple
Located in the Kilpauk neighbourhood near the Purasawalkam border in Chennai district, Pathala Ponniamman Temple is dedicated to the goddess Ponniamman. According to temple tradition, the deity was discovered approximately four centuries ago when the area was grassland; workers uncovered a stone idol of the goddess while clearing vegetation. The temple holds significant spiritual importance for women devotees and serves as a family deity for numerous families across Chennai and surrounding areas. Daily worship includes the Thirukkaappu pooja performed between 6:15 a.m. and 6:45 a.m. The temple operates under government oversight through the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department.
