Parumala Valiya Panayannarkavu Devi Temple stands as one of Kerala's most significant Bhadrakali shrines, situated along the serene Pampa river at Parumala in Pathanamthitta District. The temple complex houses two main sanctums containing fourteen deities, with Lord Shiva facing westward toward the river and Devi Bhadrakali in her avatar as slayer of Dariakasura facing east. According to tradition, sage Parashurama installed Lord Shiva's idol during the Treta Yuga approximately five thousand years ago, while sages Durvasa and Narada are credited with the original installations of all deities. The temple is distinguished by its remarkable wall paintings depicting narratives from the Devi Bhagavatam, Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Bhagavatam, representing artwork of considerable antiquity and artistic merit. References to this sacred site appear in classical Malayalam literature including Aithihyamala and Unnuneeli Sandesam. The complex features tall palmira trees, pristine forests, and idols of Nagarajas and Nagayakshis positioned at five locations throughout the grounds, creating an atmosphere of spiritual tranquility that attracts devotees from across India.
