Niranam Thrikkapaleeswaram Dakshinamurthy Temple stands as a rare shrine where the presiding deity is Dakshinamurthy, Shiva in his form as the eternal guru of knowledge, rather than the more common Shivalingam. Located at the historic village of Niranam in Pathanamthitta District along the Pampa River, this Dravidian-style structure exemplifies classical temple architecture. According to tradition, sage Parashurama installed the deity, making it one of the 108 renowned Shiva temples across Kerala. The temple holds distinctive significance as the only Kerala shrine where the Shiva lingam is said to originate from the Himalayas. The sanctum sanctorum faces east and houses the principal idol of Kapaleeshvaran Dakshinamurthy. The temple features a separate shrine dedicated to the Sapta Mathas—seven forms of Adi Parashakti—a unique aspect rarely found elsewhere. Historically intertwined with the Niranam poets (Kannassa Kavikal) of the 14th-15th centuries, the temple remains a center for Vidyarambham (initiation into learning) during Vijayadasami, reflecting its enduring association with knowledge and wisdom.
