Palathara Durga Devi Temple
About Palathara Durga Devi Temple
The main shrine follows principles of Vastu Shastra in its design and orientation, with the sanctum facing eastward. The structure incorporates traditional Kerala temple architecture, featuring a five-platform base (pancha vargam tara) constructed in black stone with intricate carved work. The roof is fully clad in copper sheets and crowned with a dome (amalaka). The shrine's doors and steps are fashioned from teak wood, while the surrounding courtyard floor is laid entirely in black stone.
The sanctum itself is built according to the Shadardhara principle—a foundational concept in temple architecture that references the six energy centers (chakras) and symbolizes the state of samadhi. This architectural approach reflects deep spiritual intent in the temple's physical form. A graceful prayer hall (namaskara mandapam) stands before the main shrine, similarly constructed in the temple's architectural style with black stone platforms, pillars, copper-sheeted roof, and teak wood carvings depicting the nine celestial bodies (navagrahas).
Daily Worship and Rituals
The temple maintains regular daily worship throughout the year. Devotees can participate in or witness various ritual services including archana (ritual worship), pushpa anjali (flower offerings), Ganesha puja, Bhagavathi puja, and Ganesha homa (fire ritual). Every Friday, the temple conducts special observances including the lighting of oil lamps and anna dana (food offering).
During the month of Vrischika (November-December), extended worship takes place over forty-one days, featuring special chanting (chirappu), mandala puja, and devotional singing. In the month of Kanni (August-September), on the day of Ayilyam nakshatra, serpent worship ceremonies are performed at the sarpa kavvu, including serpent songs and ritual bathing with milk and rice.
Festival Celebrations
The temple's principal festival, Palathara Pooram, occurs during Chitra Nakshatra in the month of Meena (March-April). This celebration features the Gajamela—a grand procession of adorned elephants—and the Kudamattam ceremony, where devotees exchange colorful parasols as an expression of joy and devotion.
Navaratri Maholsavam, observed in September-October, extends across nine nights with special rituals, prayers, and cultural events honoring Goddess Durga in her various manifestations. The festival emphasizes the victory of good over evil and draws enthusiastic participation from devotees seeking the goddess's blessings. Additionally, the temple observes Durgashtami, Mahanavami, and Vijayadashami with elaborate celebrations each year. Vidyarambha (the ritual initiation of children into learning) is also solemnized annually at the temple.
Visiting the Temple
The temple is located at coordinates 10.8687582, 76.4619723 in Palatara, Thattamala, Kollam district. Visitors should plan their visit during the main festival periods for the fullest experience: Palathara Pooram in March-April or Navaratri Maholsavam in September-October. The temple complex includes facilities for abhisheka (ritual bathing) services, with a spacious courtyard (mullapathandhala) where all necessary arrangements for worship are available.
As with most Hindu temples, visitors should dress modestly and remove footwear before entering the sanctum. It is advisable to contact the temple in advance regarding specific darshan timings, as festival days typically operate on different schedules than regular worship hours. The temple's location within Kollam district makes it accessible to those visiting the broader region.
