Anchumurthy Temple anikode
About Anchumurthy Temple anikode
The temple dates to approximately 900 CE, making it roughly 1100 years old. Like many ancient shrines, it fell into decline over the centuries, its sanctity diminished by time and neglect. Restoration efforts began in January 2008 under the guidance of Vasthu Vidwan Sri Krishnan Embrathiripad, with support from Dr. N. Gopalakrishnan of the Indian Institute of Scientific Heritage and local community members. The project demonstrated how heritage conservation could proceed through careful blending of traditional values with practical constraints.
The temple's ritual reinstatement—including the Ashtabanda Puna Prathishta ceremony and Maha Kumbabhishekam—took place in July 2008 under the priesthood of H.H. Rajalinga Gurukkal and with the blessing of H.H. Swami Nithyananda Saraswathy. Since then, the temple has operated under the stewardship of Sri Shyam Chaithanya, who has guided its ongoing activities and spiritual mission.
Vedic Learning Center
In April 2009, the temple established Sandeepani Saadhanalayam, a secular Vedic learning center dedicated to self-realization through traditional knowledge. This institution has become a hub for Vedic education across Palakkad district, with approximately 17 temples in the region now participating in its programs. The center offers daily instruction in Vedic mantras, temple rituals, sacred instruments, and teachings from the Bhagavad Gita.
The temple's role as an educational space reflects its broader mission to preserve and transmit Hindu philosophical and ritual traditions. Visitors interested in Vedic learning may find opportunities to observe or participate in these classes, though specific details about visitor access should be confirmed directly with the temple.
Rituals and Observances
The temple conducts Pithruyajnam—one of the five great Vedic sacrifices—during the months of Karkkidakam and Thulam on the banks of the Nila River. This ritual honors ancestors and maintains cosmic order according to Vedic principles. The temple's daily worship encompasses the five deity traditions, with each receiving appropriate veneration according to their respective liturgical practices.
The Nila River holds sacred significance within the temple's spiritual framework, worshipped as a manifestation of the holy Ganga. This reverence for the river as a living sacred presence shapes the temple's relationship to its natural setting and informs certain ritual observances conducted along its banks.
Visiting Information
The temple is open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. It remains closed on Sundays. For inquiries or to confirm current timings, visitors may contact the temple at +91 9447354285 or 0447082892.
The temple is located in Anikode village within Mathur panchayat, Palakkad district. The postal address is Anikode, Palapotta, Kariyamkode post, Kottayi, Palakkad 678572, Kerala. Visitors should dress modestly, as is customary at Hindu temples. Shoes are typically removed before entering the sanctum. Those wishing to participate in rituals or learn about specific practices should inquire at the temple regarding protocols and any restrictions that may apply.
Setting and Atmosphere
The temple's location on the Nila riverbank places it within a natural landscape that devotees regard as integral to its spiritual character. The 4.5-acre grounds offer a retreat from urban surroundings, with the river's presence shaping both the physical environment and the temple's ritual life. The restoration work has preserved the site's historical character while making it accessible to contemporary visitors and practitioners.
