About Chinakkathoor Temple

Located in Palappuram near Ottapalam in Kerala's Palakkad district, Chinakkathoor Bhagavathi Temple stands as one of the region's oldest Devi temples. The temple complex comprises two distinct shrines: the Thazhekavu (lower shrine) and Melakavu (upper shrine), with the latter believed to possess greater antiquity. Within the sacred grounds stands a shrine dedicated to Lord Ganapathy in his Vidya Ganapati form, positioned near an iconic banyan tree. The temple achieves widespread recognition through its annual Chinakkathoor Pooram festival, celebrated during the Malayalam month of Kumbham on the Makam asterism. This vibrant celebration draws devotees and visitors of all faiths and castes across Kerala, featuring spectacular elephant processions with 33 tuskers, traditional orchestras including Panchavadyam and Pandimelam, and classical art forms such as Theyyam, Kaalavela, and Kuthiravela.
