About Othera Puthukulangara Bhagawathi Temple
Situated in Othera village within Thiruvalla Taluk of Pathanamthitta district, Kerala, this historic temple stands as one of thirty significant Durga temples in Central Kerala. The temple is managed by a Trust overseen by an elected committee. The presiding deity is Goddess Durga Devi, with secondary deities including Mahadevan, Dharma Sastha, Ganapathy, Yakshiamma, and Brahmmarakshas. The temple is particularly celebrated for hosting Padayani, a ten-day festival held in the Malayalam month of Meenam (March–April) culminating on Thiruvathira star day. During this festival, Kolam Thullal performances depict divine and malevolent figures through traditional designs painted on areca palm sheaths using natural dyes. The temple is unique worldwide for presenting a Chattathel Kolam crafted from 1001 areca sheaths, which is transported on hand carts and displayed within the temple grounds. Various Kolam forms including Yakshi, Pakshi, Madan, Marutha, Kalan Kolam, and Bhairavi are showcased, with Valia Kolam representing a fierce aspect of Bhadrakali Devi typically presented on the festival's final day.
