Kallisseri Azhakiyakavu Devi Temple, Chengannur

Azhakiyakavu Devi Temple is one of thirty shrines across Central Travancore where Padayani, an ancient Dravidian ritualistic art form, is performed annually. This tradition represents a continuity of worship practice stretching back centuries, rooted in the region's pre-classical heritage.

During the Padayani festival, the temple hosts folk dramas including Kakkasassi Natakam and Pooppada Thullal. The centrepiece is Kolam Thullal, in which skilled performers don elaborate masks and breastplates crafted from areca palm sheaths and decorated with natural dyes. Designs such as Bhairavi Kolam, Kalan Kolam (Kalari), Sundara Yakshi, and Ambara Yakshi are created for this purpose. Dancers move to specially composed songs while accompanied by the thappu, a traditional percussion instrument. This performance is both an artistic expression and a ritual offering to the goddess.

Festivals and Observances

The Padayani festival unfolds over eight days in the Malayalam month of Kumbham, beginning on the Uthradam star day and concluding on the Aswathy star day—typically falling in February or March. This is the principal festival and the best time to visit the temple if you wish to witness the full ceremonial life of the shrine.

Beyond Padayani, the temple observes Kumbha Bharani, Meena Bharani, Shivaratri, Navaratri, and Thirukkarthika. Daily worship includes rituals such as Chanthattam, Archana, Pushpanjali, Ganapathy Homam, Sahasra Namarchana, Muzhukappu, and the offering of Payasam. These varied observances maintain the rhythm of devotional practice throughout the year.

Daily Worship and Offerings

The temple conducts regular pujas and accepts various offerings from devotees. Archana (ritual worship with flowers and prayers), Pushpanjali (flower offerings), and Homam (fire rituals) are among the services available. Sahasra Namarchana, the recitation of a thousand names of the deity, is performed, as is Muzhukappu, a comprehensive ritual offering. Payasam, a sacred sweet preparation, is distributed as prasadam.

The months of February and March, during the Padayani festival, offer the richest experience of the temple's ritual and cultural life, though the temple remains active year-round.
