About Mudhai Devi temple
Located on an artificial mound in Waghali village within Chalisgaon tehsil of Jalgaon district in the Khandesh region of Maharashtra, Mudhai Devi temple exemplifies early medieval Hindu architecture. Built in the Hemadpanti style between 1150–1200 AD, the temple features a stellate plan with a garbhagriha, ardhamandapa, mandapa, and portico supported by 24 pillars. Though partially ruined, the structure retains well-preserved elements including the pitha, vedibandha, and jangha, though the original shikhara is missing and replaced with stone slabs and concrete. The temple walls display minimal ornamentation with ratnas, foliage, geometrical, and grassamukha designs. Notable sculptures include standing images of Chandika, Surya, and Ganesha on the central walls, while the interior garbhagriha houses an Uma-Maheshwar image with mount Nandi. Recognized for its archaeological significance, the temple represents an important early medieval site where a goddess form is worshipped.
