About Mavelikara Maruthakshi Devi Temple

Located 1.7 kilometers from Mavelikara in Alappuzha district, this temple was founded when Mahatma Ayyankali visited the region and identified a suitable site for construction. A local practitioner of Tantric rites built the initial small temple where Kodungaloor Bhagavathy was consecrated. The Pulaya community subsequently expanded the shrine, establishing separate temples for subordinate deities including Maruthakshi Amma, Ganapathy, Siva, Bhuvaneswari Amma, Bala Murugan, Nagaraja, Nagayakshi, and Maha Vishnu. The temple is notable for its unique governance structure, with members of seven community groups holding priestly rights and no Brahmin-led rituals performed. The presiding deity is Maruthakshi Devi, with Appuppan (the temple's founder) also venerated as a protective spirit to whom devotees present their grievances before offerings.
