Avittathur Mahadeva Temple stands as one of Kerala's oldest and most significant Shiva sanctuaries, situated in the village of Avittathur within Thrissur District. The temple's origins trace to legendary times, with local tradition attributing the installation of the Shiva lingam to sage Agastya, while alternative accounts credit Lord Parasurama. The village itself ranks among the 64 original Brahmin settlements established in ancient Kerala, placing it alongside other historically prominent settlements such as Thaliparamb and Peruvanam. The temple is distinguished by its traditional Kerala architectural style, featuring intricate woodcarvings that depict the Kiratha narrative on the Sreekovil walls and elaborate ceiling work in the namaskara mandapam showcasing the Nava-Grahas.
