About Mahabaleshwar Temple
Built between 345 and 365 CE by Kadamba dynasty king Mayurasharma, the Mahabaleshwar Temple stands as one of Karnataka's seven sacred Muktikshetras or places of salvation. Constructed in the classical Dravidian architectural style using granite stone, the temple features a distinctive sanctum sanctorum housing the Pranalinga on a square Saligrama Peetha, with a small central aperture allowing devotees to view the deity. The temple complex expanded significantly during the Vijayanagara period and remains a major pilgrimage destination where millions of devotees annually perform darshan and worship. The temple's spiritual significance is heightened by its beachfront location overlooking Gokarna beach, where pilgrims traditionally cleanse themselves in the Arabian Sea before entering the shrine. It is also recognized as the Kashi of the South and holds particular importance for performing death rites and obsequies.
