About Macchapurisvarar Temple, Koyildevarayanpettai

This historic Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva stands in Koyildevarayanpettai, anciently known as Thiru Chelur, with origins tracing to the Chola period. The presiding deity, represented by a lingam in the garbhagriha, is known as Macchapurisvarar, with the consort goddess Sugantha Kundhalambigai. According to the temple's sthala purana, Vishnu in his Matsya (fish) avatar worshipped Shiva at this sacred site to obtain blessings for recovering the Vedas from the demon Hayagriva, earning Shiva the epithet Macchapurisvarar or "Lord of the Fish Town." The temple features traditional South Indian Dravidian architecture and contains 53 inscriptions from the Chola period (10th–13th centuries) recording royal endowments and administrative activities. The complex includes shrines of Subramania with consorts Valli and Deivanai, as well as subsidiary shrines of Dharma Vinayaka, Navagraha, and Sanisvara. Located 3 km from Papanasam in the Papanasam–Thanjavur region, the temple's antiquity exceeds 1,000 years, underscoring its significance as a Shaivite center during the Chola dynasty's consolidation of religious architecture in the Kaveri delta.
