About Kothandaramaswamy Temple

Situated on the southernmost tip of an island surrounded by the Bay of Bengal and Gulf of Mannar, approximately 13 kilometres from Rameswaram, the Kothandaramaswamy Temple represents a significant pilgrimage site within the Vaishnava tradition, classified among the 108 Abhimana Kshethras. The temple's name derives from 'Kothandam,' referring to Lord Rama's bow, and the shrine is distinguished by its worship of Vibhishana, Ravana's brother who sought refuge with Rama during the epic conflict. According to tradition, this location marks where Vibhishana first met Lord Rama. The temple's walls feature intricate carvings depicting scenes from the Ramayana, and the structure's survival of the catastrophic 1964 cyclone that obliterated Dhanushkodi has enhanced its spiritual significance. The revered Swami Vivekananda is said to have visited this sacred site following his historic journey to Chicago.
