About Kasi Viswanathar temple, Tenkasi

Located in the heart of Tenkasi district in Tamil Nadu, this principal temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva as Kasi Viswanathar and Goddess Parvathi as Ulagamman. According to tradition, King Parakrama Pandyan established the temple after receiving divine instruction in a dream to create a southern equivalent of Kashi. The structure exemplifies Dravidian architectural excellence with its towering nine-tier Rajagopuram, expansive granite corridors, intricately carved mandapams featuring musical pillars, and beautifully sculpted shrines dedicated to various deities including Dakshinamurthy, Nataraja, and the Navagrahas. The sacred Kasi Theertham tank holds special significance in the pilgrimage experience. The temple received patronage from both Pandya and Madurai Nayak rulers, with a 180-foot tower completed in 1990. It remains a vital spiritual center and cultural hub, attracting devotees undertaking the Pancha Kashi pilgrimage tradition.
