About Karppillikkavu Sree Mahadeva Temple
Located in Manjapra village in Ernakulam District, Kerala, this ancient Hindu temple is devoted to Lord Shiva manifested as Kirathamoorthy or Vettakkaran (the hunter). According to temple legend, the original installation was performed by the legendary king Kartavirya Arjuna, who later installed Shiva after finding the sanctum of Sri Devi (Parvathy) vacant. Kartavirya Arjuna is said to have meditated in a cave on the temple's northern side. The temple is architecturally designed in the traditional Kerala style. A notable feature is that the deity grants darshan facing the western direction, distinguishing it from many other temples. The temple is believed to have been constructed around 2000 BCE. The main annual festival is celebrated during Makara (January-February) for eight days, culminating in the Aarattu ceremony on Thiruvathira Nakshathram in Makaram month.
