Located near Thirumanur in Ariyalur district of Tamil Nadu, Karkodeswarar Temple stands as a testament to Chola-era architecture and devotion. The presiding deity Karkodeswarar faces east, while his consort Balambika faces south. The temple features intricate sculptural work depicting Karkodaga performing Shiva puja with Vinayaka and Nandi. The prakaram contains shrines dedicated to Vinayaka, Subramania with consorts Valli and Deivanai, Durga, Chandikesvarar, and the Navagrahas. The inner sanctum houses representations of Dakshinamurthy, Ardhanarishvara, Lingodbhava, and Brahma. A mandapa dedicated to Nataraja and a temple kitchen complete the sacred complex. According to epigraphic evidence from 45 stone inscriptions, the temple was constructed by Sundara Chola in AD 962 and subsequently maintained by various Chola, Pandya, and Posala rulers.
