Kallazhagar Temple
About Kallazhagar Temple
The temple's origins connect to an ancient narrative: the seven sages once brought a dispute to Vishnu for resolution at this hill. After settling their disagreement, Vishnu remained at the location in the Kallazhagar form. This puranic account grounds the temple's spiritual significance in the broader Hindu cosmology of divine intervention and settlement.
The area itself has deep historical roots. Inscriptions refer to the region as Keelaraniya Mutta Nadu in ancient times, with Alagarkovil (also known as Thirumaliruncholai) forming part of what was once a subdivision of the Pandyan kingdom. The temple's presence within this landscape connects it to centuries of Tamil religious and cultural history, though the temple complex as it stands today reflects various periods of development and renovation.
Daily Worship and Darshan
The temple opens at 6:00 AM with the Suprabhatham ritual, followed by Vishwaroopa Darshanam at 6:30 AM. The morning darshan period extends until 12:30 PM. After a midday break, the temple reopens at 3:30 PM for evening worship, concluding at 7:30 PM. The Madhyana Pooja occurs at noon, the Sandhya Aarati at 7:00 PM, and the Ardha Jamam at 9:00 PM.
During the month of Margali (typically November-December), the schedule adjusts: the temple opens earlier at 4:00 AM and closes at noon, then reopens at 3:30 PM until 7:00 PM. These timings are subject to change during festivals and special observances. Visitors should confirm current hours before planning their visit, as ritual schedules may shift according to the temple calendar.
The Chithirai Festival
The temple's most significant annual event is the Chithirai festival, celebrated during the Tamil month of Chithirai (April-May). During this period, the processional deity (utsava murti) of Kallazhagar is carried in procession from the Azhagar Hills down to the Vaigai river that flows past Madurai. This journey commemorates Kallazhagar attending the wedding of his sister Meenakshi to Sundareshwarar—a theological narrative unique to Madurai that positions Vishnu as Meenakshi's elder brother and the one who gives her away to Shiva.
The river-procession draws crowds numbering in the millions, making it one of the largest single religious gatherings in South India outside the Kumbh Melas. The festival represents a convergence of the temple's sacred geography with the broader religious life of Madurai, linking the hill shrine to the city's most important deity and her celebrations.
Visiting the Temple
The best season to visit is October through March, when the climate is cooler and more comfortable for pilgrimage. The temple is located in Alagarkovil, Madurai District, approximately 625301, in the Melur taluk area, positioned to the north-northeast of Madurai city.
Visitors should be aware that the temple area has minimal residential development beyond staff quarters, making it a relatively secluded shrine. Standard temple etiquette applies: remove footwear before entering the sanctum, dress modestly, and maintain respectful conduct during worship. Photography policies may vary; it is advisable to inquire with temple staff before photographing rituals or the sanctum. The temple administration can provide information about specific poojas, donations, and annadhanam (temple food offerings) through their official channels.
