Kailasanathar Temple, Nedungudi

The goddess shrine dates to the 13th century CE, making this among the older sacred sites in the region. Local tradition recounts that in earlier times, Nedungudi was abundant with vilva trees. Two brothers, Perunjeevi and Siranjeevi, sought to establish worship here. When Siranjeevi delayed in bringing a linga from Varanasi, Perunjeevi installed and began worshipping one himself. Upon his brother's late arrival, conflict arose over a second installation. Siranjeevi then undertook penance through worship of Vishnu. According to the account, Vishnu advised both brothers to worship Shiva together, assuring them that the place would gain spiritual importance through their unified devotion.

Temple Structure and Layout

The temple complex includes several key structures: the garbhagriha (inner sanctum), maha mandapa (great hall), and artha mandapa (pillared hall). The shrine of Prasannanayaki, the goddess, dates to the 13th century and represents an important part of the temple's architectural heritage. The hilltop location provides the temple with a distinctive setting, and the Pambaru river flows in the foothills below, considered sacred by devotees who bathe there seeking wellbeing.

Kalasanthi puja occurs at 8:30 AM, Uttchikkalam at noon, Sayaratchai at 6:00 PM, and Arthajamam at 8:00 PM. These rituals follow the traditional rhythm of Shiva temple worship across Tamil Nadu.
