Jagannath Temple

According to temple records, King Indradyumna of Avanti originally established the main temple. The present complex, however, was rebuilt from the eleventh century onwards under Anantavarman Chodaganga, the first ruler of the Eastern Ganga dynasty. This reconstruction rebuilt the shrine complex on the site of earlier temples, though the main Jagannath temple itself was preserved from the earlier period.

The temple's connection to local heritage runs deep. Local legends link the temple's idols with Nilamadhaba deva, a deity worshipped by tribal communities. The daitapatis, who serve as hereditary temple servitors, claim descent from these tribal populations, maintaining a living link between the temple's ancient roots and its present practice.

The Nabakalebara, a significant ceremonial event, marks important moments in the temple's liturgical cycle.
