About Dhareshwar Mahadev Temple

This historically significant temple dedicated to Lord Shiva holds deep spiritual importance for the people of Dhar. Shiva is venerated here by names such as Dhareshwar and Dharnath, meaning 'Lord of Dhar.' According to local tradition, the temple dates to the era of Raja Bhoja and served as the favored deity of the Paramara dynasty. The shrine has maintained its religious significance for millennia, drawing devotees throughout the year. During the month of Shravan (July–August), the temple becomes a center of intense devotional activity, with visitors arriving from distant places to participate in celebrations marked by chanting of 'Har Har Mahadev' and 'Bol Bam.' A notable tradition involves the Palaki Yatra, a grand procession during Shravan in which the deity is carried through the city, a custom believed to have originated during Raja Bhoja's reign when the king himself participated on foot.
