Built between the 16th century under king Madhukar Shah and completed by his son king Vir Singh Deo, Chaturbhuj Temple stands as Orchha's tallest structure and a masterpiece of Bundeli Nagar-style architecture. The temple was originally constructed to house an idol of Lord Ram brought from Ayodhya by Queen Ganesh Kunwari, but according to legend, the deity refused to be relocated from the nearby Ram Raja Temple where it was temporarily placed. This unique circumstance makes Chaturbhuj Temple distinctive among Hindu temples—it remains dedicated to Lord Vishnu without his primary idol, instead housing an image of Krishna and Radha. The temple rises on a 4.5-meter-high plinth accessed by a flight of stairs and represents a remarkable fusion of religious, palatial, and fortification design elements. Managed by the Archaeological Survey of India, it attracts the maximum number of tourists in Orchha and holds significant cultural importance as a place of worship for the royal family.
