About Brahmapureeswarar Temple

Located approximately 35 kilometers from Trichy in Tamil Nadu's Tiruchirapalli district, the Brahmapureeswarar Temple stands as one of the region's most significant pilgrimage sites. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped as Brahmapureeswarar—a name commemorating Shiva's intervention when Brahma grew arrogant about his creative powers. According to mythology, Shiva severed Brahma's fifth head and cursed him, leading Brahma to establish twelve lingams at this sacred site as an act of devotion and penance. Estimated to be around 1500 years old and predating the Thanjavur Big Temple, this shrine is recognized as a Thevara Vaippu Sthalam, mentioned in the Devaram hymns of ancient Tamil saints Appar and Sundarar. The temple remained largely neglected until 1998, when restoration efforts began, and it was revitalized by 1999 under the stewardship of Dharmapuram Adheenam, a Saivite monastic organization. Currently administered by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of Tamil Nadu, the temple attracts devotees who believe that seeking blessings here can alter their life's course.
