BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir

The mandir showcases traditional Nagara-style architecture, designed according to Southern Shilpa Shaili principles by Sompura artisans. The structure measures 184.6 feet in length, 181.6 feet in width, and 74.6 feet in height, occupying a total area of 33,523.36 square feet. The entire building is constructed from Indian pink sandstone and red stone sourced from Rajasthan, with no steel used in its construction—a testament to traditional building methods.

The architectural ornamentation is extensive and intricate. The temple features 23 samrans (ornamental spires), including 7 giant ones, along with 109 beautifully carved torans (decorative arches). The structure is supported by 140 intricately carved pillars, and the surfaces are adorned with 10,269 carved sculptures and deity representations that reflect the heritage of Maharashtra and India. The detailed carvings were hand-crafted in Rajasthan and assembled on-site like a three-dimensional puzzle, demonstrating the precision of traditional stone-working techniques.

Daily Worship and Darshan

The temple opens daily from 7:00 am to 12:00 pm and again from 4:00 pm to 8:30 pm. Darshan—the viewing of the deity—is available during specific windows throughout the day: 7:30 am to 10:15 am, 11:15 am to 12:00 pm, 4:00 pm to 6:15 pm, 7:00 pm to 7:30 pm, and 8:30 pm to 9:00 pm.

Four aartis (ritual ceremonies involving the offering of light) are performed daily. The Shangar Aarti takes place at 7:30 am, the Rajbhog Aarti at 11:15 am, the Sandhya Aarti at 7:00 pm, and the Shayan Aarti at 8:30 pm. Early mornings offer a peaceful atmosphere for darshan, while evenings are particularly striking, with the illuminated temple resembling a palace decorated with lights in the form of diyas. The temple is open to visitors of all faiths.

Visitor Information and Etiquette

Entry to the temple is free, though donations are welcome and tax deductible. Visitors should observe a modest dress code: casual attire is acceptable, but sleeveless tops, shorts, and skirts shorter than knee length are not permitted. Sarongs are available on request for those who need them. Footwear must be removed before entering the temple; shoe racks are provided for this purpose.

During aarti ceremonies, designated seating areas are maintained separately for men and women. Photography using mobile phone cameras is not permitted inside the mandir or haveli (residential courtyard). Large baggage is not allowed, though small handbags may be carried. A snack shop on the premises serves vegetarian and Jain food at affordable rates in a clean, hygienic setting. A gift shop sells books, CDs, and DVDs of bhajans and kirtans, as well as books on Jain and Hindu culture.

Facilities and Activities

An Abhishek Mandap—a separate ritual area—is available for those wishing to offer special prayers, a practice devotees undertake with the belief that such offerings fulfil wishes when performed with faith and devotion. The temple regularly hosts aartis, discourses, and exhibitions focused on Indian spirituality and heritage, providing opportunities for both spiritual practice and cultural learning.
