Ardhanareeswarar Temple

The temple sits approximately 1,900 feet above sea level on a steep hill. Reaching the sanctum requires either climbing roughly 1,200 to 1,250 steps or using paved roads accessible by vehicle. The physical ascent is integral to the pilgrimage experience here. Along the way, several mantapams—resting shelters—provide places to pause and recover.

Upon reaching the summit, visitors encounter the temple's most striking architectural feature: a five-tiered Raja Gopuram (tower) on the northern side. The temple's outer walls extend 260 feet in the east-west direction and 170 feet north-south, creating a substantial sacred enclosure. Entry is typically through the northern gateway, from which a flight of about twenty steps descends to the outer passage that circles the shrine.

Daily Worship and Darshan Hours

The temple opens at 6:00 a.m. and closes at 2:00 p.m., reopening at 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. On new moon days (Amavasya), the schedule extends: the temple opens at 5:00 a.m. and remains open until 7:00 p.m. without a midday closure. These extended hours on new moon days reflect the special significance accorded to that lunar phase in Hindu worship.

Vaikasi Vishakam Festival

This festival celebrates the marriage ceremony of the deity, drawing devotees to witness and participate in the sacred event. This is considered an auspicious time to visit, though the increased crowds should be anticipated.
