About Akkanna Madanna caves
These twin caves represent a significant archaeological heritage site, with origins tracing to the 6th and 7th centuries CE during the Eastern Chalukya dynasty. The caves were subsequently named after Akkanna and Madanna, two ministers in the court of Abul Hasan Tana Shah during the 17th century. The structure comprises upper and lower chambers connected by a five-step staircase, featuring rectangular east-facing designs supported by octagonal pillars. The tri-celled sanctums house idols of Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwar, representing the Hindu trinity. The upper cave, which is better preserved, contains an important 7th-century inscription. Managed by the Archaeological Survey of India as a protected monument of national importance, the caves display intricate carvings and Buddhist architectural patterns, standing in the shadow of the nearby Kanaka Durga Temple.
