About Aayiram Kaliamman Temple
Located approximately 8 kilometers from Karaikal in Puducherry, Aayiram Kaliamman Temple houses a wooden idol of Goddess Kaliamman. According to local legend, a devotee from the Senguntha Mudaliar community discovered a silver box containing the goddess's idol floating in the sea, accompanied by a palm leaf inscription indicating the deity should receive worship with 1000 items daily. Since daily worship with 1000 items proved impractical, the community established a special festival conducted once every five years during the Tamil month of Vaikasi (May-June), lasting three days. During this festival, the original idol is displayed for darshan; outside the festival period, the idol remains sealed in the box. The temple remains open year-round, though the primary deity is unavailable for viewing except during the festival celebration.
