Karaikal Ammaiyar Temple
About Karaikal Ammaiyar Temple
This Hindu temple honors Punithavathi, a 5th-century devotee of Lord Shiva who became known as Karaikal Ammaiyar (mother of Karaikal). According to legend, she demonstrated extraordinary devotion through miracles involving mangoes offered to a disguised Lord Shiva, eventually renouncing her youth and beauty to pursue spiritual practice. The temple, constructed by Malaiperumal Pillai in 1929 at the site of her former residence, features a three-tiered gopuram with two entrances serving separate shrines for Lord Shiva and Karaikal Ammaiyar. The main sanctum enshrines the Shivalinga Somanathar, while Karaikal Ammaiyar's shrine displays her standing figure holding a serving ladle, accompanied by murals depicting her life. Additional shrines honor Ganesha, Nataraj-Shivakami, Gaja Lakshmi, Surya, and Chandra. The Mangani Tirunal festival celebrating the mango fruit occurs during the Tamil month of Aani (June-July) on the full moon day.
